Day 19: Five blogs I follow

Hyperbole and a half by Allie Brosch
If you haven’t yet been exposed to Allie’s wit, start at the start and by the time you get to her most recent post from October last year, I dare you not to be pained that there are currently no more to read. Allie has taken a hiatus from blogging to deal with the depression that she writes about in her October post and I hope she’s back and feeling better soon.

Just a ‘mom’ writing about the books she reads but interesting to follow.

This is the blog of a friend and ex-teacher of mine. He is insightful and genuine. I love his writing.

Leisl Egan of ‘Girl in a Hat’ is funny. There hasn’t been much action here lately either but when she does write, I like to read it. Even her bio is awesome. I wish I had a witty one like that!

This is the blog of an ex-student of mine. She’s an author and is off having adventures untold and excitements unnumbered!

I know it was only meant to be five but this is a blog I’ve just started reading because my dad suggested it to me. He’s become quite obsessed with it himself. I’ve only read a bit so far but it’s interesting stuff and (Dad was right, who’d have thought) very up-my-alley.

What blogs do you follow? Why? Should I follow them too?

Day 11: The Last Book I Read

Sadly, it was a text about completing a PhD. It was interesting, though, & written with humour (which is probably the only reason I was able to finish it.) It was called How to Tame your PhD by Dr Inger Mewburn and it’s based on Mewburn’s posts from her Thesis Whisperer blog. The blog is very worth a read if you’re doing any higher degree study.

But if I’m going to go back to the last novel I read, it was Broken by Daniel Clay, a disturbingly modern take on To Kill a Mockingbird which can be tricky to do well but it was really quite awesome.

What was the last book you read?

Day 7: Dream Job

For a long time now I’ve dreamed of running a writing school for teenagers out of my base of a café, bar & bookshop/performance space where I would also have the time and the inspiration to write myself, perhaps even taking on writing a novel. Of course, this requires such a space to be everything to all people and I’m not sure that one shop front can do that in real life, certainly not the way it does in Dharma’s store that sells nothing.

(This clip starts with Dharma’s first ‘customer’ who, when asked, admits he’s not looking for anything but just waiting for the bus.)

I’m vaguely serious about one day realising at least part of this dream but at this stage, I’m not sure which part exactly. Besides which, I’m fairly busy being a celebrant and, starting Monday, taking a couple of tutes for a first year writing subject at Uni… Both of which are my realised-dream jobs!

What's your dream job?

Speak Now

I know, I know. It's been ages! I'm a terrible blogger and I don't deserve you. What if I buy you a pony* to make up for it?

In the meantime, I do have some exciting news. A little while ago I wrote a guest blog for Same Same about how disgusted I am that we are still having the debate about legally recognising same-sex marriage. They printed it then it caught the attention of Victor Marsh who is editing a collection of thoughts on Australian Marriage Equality. Victor asked to include my piece and it has made it through the publisher's cut & I'm in. For more info about the book, you can go to the blog which is also linked to the title of this post.

The Melbourne launch is on the 30th October at 2pm in Hares & Hyenas Bookshop, Johnson St, Fitzroy. I'd love to see you there.

Cheers,
Deb
